The Vagrant City Scandal

About Us

Music Genre: Rock
Sub Genre: Indie Rock

Year Formed: 2006
Location: Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

The Vagrant City Scandal burst onto the music scene in early 2007, with a rock n roll energy, the likes of which has rarely been seen. With the release of their debut E.P. ‘Dirty Town’ came dingy pub shows, acclaimed live reviews and the experience to combine a command of the stage with an honest representation of their infectious, rock, pop and roll.

Wowing audiences at over 30 live shows last year alone, The Vagrant City Scandal have supported the likes of Grandma’s Basement and Showpony and already this year, have shared the stage with Evermore, MXPX and British India.

Their sound has attracted attention from American pop-rockers Eagles of Death Metal, they have already gained airplay on the National Youth Network station Triple J (JJJ) as well as being played on a number of local/community radio stations. They have also been featured on numerous compilation CD’s including Coastbaked 5 and Starlight Power-Pop International Compilation.

With an average age of 18, band members Elliot Heinrich (Vocals, Guitar), Michael Surplice (Bass, Backing Vocals, Synth) and Jake Pierce (Drums) were quietly unaware of the seminal influences which had shaped their sound into something truly original but easily accessible by both older and younger generations. Described as “ energetic, guitar-pop meets, 80’s post-punk in a garage jam session”, The Vagrant City Scandal knew they had fallen across a winning formula likened to early Midnight Oil guitar-pop with the brazen, musical lawlessness of The Clash, melodic pop-sensibility of The Cure and the raw, quality song-writing of the likes of vintage and modern, garage-greats Gang of Four, Pulp, The Vines and The Strokes. Inspired by both 1960’s Brit-pop and the 1980’s post-punk revolution, The Vagrant City Scandal’s sound evolved from straight-up rock and roll to encompassing earlier influences to develop a more varied, danceable guitar pop sound.

This exciting transition is demonstrated by their latest limited edition release, “Vanguard” which sees 2 tracks from the previous release, “Dirty Town” and 3 brand new tracks including the lead single, “Scleratica”. “Vanguard” too sees the lead up to The Vagrant City Scandal’s second full E.P. entitled “Laissez-Faire, due late April. Recorded at Ian Haug’s (of Powderfinger fame) Airlock Studios and Woodhead Studios on the Sunshine Coast, the 6 track E.P. includes 2 bonus tracks and is sure to make leaps and bounds forward into further National Airplay as well as live tour dates around Queensland and the east-coast.

Look out for these vagabonds as they drift to your town shortly to electrocute your ears, excite your eyes and free your feet.
